How to Transport a Dishwasher Properly
Drain all residual water
Water always remains in the filter, the pump, and the hoses. Remove and empty the filter, tilt the appliance briefly forward, and let the hoses run empty. Any water left inside ends up in the electronics en route – or on the cargo floor.
Secure hoses and racks
Unscrew the inlet and drain hoses, empty them, and secure them inside the appliance. Tape the dish racks in place or take them out entirely – loose racks bang against the door in every curve.
Load upright and strap down
Dishwashers belong upright on the cargo floor, secured with lashing straps. If it exceptionally has to lie down: on its side – never on its back, where the connections sit.
Which vehicle do you need?
A dishwasher weighs 30–60 kg and fits upright in any compact van; with a hand truck and a second person it is loaded in minutes. If several appliances are moving, the 2.7 m class is worth it. All dimensions and payloads in the van guide →
Transporting a Dishwasher: The Right Preparation
At 30–60 kilograms, a dishwasher is lighter than a washing machine or fridge – its risk is not the weight but the water. After every cycle, residual water sits in the filter, the circulation pump, and both hoses, and it spills uncontrollably the moment the appliance is tilted.
So before any transport: remove and empty the filter, carefully tilt the appliance forward to let it drain, unscrew the inlet and drain hoses, empty them, and secure them inside. Tape the racks in place or take them out, and tape the door shut. A transport lock like a washing machine's is not needed – a dishwasher has no concrete counterweight and no swinging drum.
Transporting a Dishwasher Lying Down: Emergencies Only
Upright is the rule: only standing does the remaining water stay where it does no harm. Lying down, it can run into the control electronics in the base or into the door mechanism – the classic dishwasher transport damage.
If lying down truly cannot be avoided, for example in an estate car: drain especially thoroughly beforehand, lay the appliance on its side – never on its back, where the connections and hoses sit – and let it stand upright for a few hours after the drive before running the first cycle.
Removing a Built-In Dishwasher: Kick Plate First
Most dishwashers in Germany are built-in units – and those are screwed to the kitchen. Before transport: turn off the water supply, disconnect the power, remove the kick plate, and undo the fixing screws to the worktop and the side cabinets. On fully integrated models, also unscrew the furniture front.
Only then can the machine be pulled forward and out. Guide the hoses and cable carefully through the worktop opening without tearing anything off – the openings are often tighter than expected. Tape the screws and kick plate in a bag to the appliance so nothing is missing at reinstallation.
Carrying a Dishwasher and Getting It Down the Stairs
At 30–60 kilograms, a dishwasher is manageable for two people – yet the smooth housing without handles still makes it awkward. A hand truck takes the weight, a strap keeps the appliance upright on it; on the stairs one person leads above, one supports below.
On the cargo floor, the appliance is secured upright at the lashing points. How lashing straps should sit is covered in our glossary article on load securing.
Freight Forwarder, Courier, or Van with Driver?
For a single dishwasher, a classic freight forwarder is rarely worth it: long delivery windows, and often delivery only to the curb. For one appliance, a van with driver is the faster solution – with Maxmove on the same day if you wish, with carrying help up to the third-floor kitchen.
You see the binding price in advance in the transport cost calculator. If the dishwasher is moving as part of a relocation, our moving checklist helps you plan from disconnection to reinstallation.
