Plumbing and heating sites: installation days hinge on small parts

A heating replacement or bathroom refit is planned to the day: old system out, heat pump or condensing boiler in, commissioning. The main unit usually arrives on time; what is missing is everything around it – an adaptor, the right size of expansion vessel, a metre of pipe. Then a fitter drives to the wholesaler's trade counter and the site stands still until he is back.

Maxmove collects orders from the plumbing and HVAC wholesaler and takes them to site by direct drive – single fittings in a compact van, cylinders and outdoor units upright in a Sprinter or 3.5-tonne box van. You order from your wholesaler as usual and give us the collection number, site and contact person. You see the instant price and earliest pickup window before booking, and your fitter follows the delivery live.

Plumbing and heating goods have their own transport requirements: heat pump installation manuals limit the permissible tilt, drinking-water components should stay sealed until installation, refrigerant and gas cylinders are dangerous goods, and full copper tube lengths are longer than any van's load floor. Who is responsible for what is set out below. For palletised units, pallet transport is the right entry point.

What plumbing and heating firms need from wholesaler to site

From press fitting to heat pump: the goods on their way between trade counter and installation.

  • Heat pump outdoor and indoor units
  • Condensing boilers and heating boilers
  • Hot-water and buffer cylinders
  • Radiators in original packaging
  • Sanitary ware and shower trays
  • Pre-wall frames and cisterns
  • Copper, stainless and multilayer pipe
  • Press fittings, taps and valves
  • Expansion vessels and pump groups
  • Split air-con units and refrigerant lines

Three plumbing and heating runs on the Lower Rhine

Typical orders in Krefeld, Mönchengladbach and Duisburg – and what unit and site require.

  • Heating replacement in Krefeld-Bockum

To replace a gas boiler with a heat pump in a detached house in Krefeld-Bockum, Maxmove collects the outdoor unit, buffer cylinder and hydraulic module from the wholesaler in Krefeld. The units stay on their pallets and travel upright; the height of the cylinder including pallet is on the order so the vehicle fits. As there is no forklift on site, two fitters receive the units at the driveway, and a second person from Maxmove is booked too.

  • Top-up for a bathroom refit in Mönchengladbach

In an old building in Mönchengladbach-Eicken, a bathroom refit is missing a pre-wall frame with cistern, and the vanity unit arrived damaged. The wholesaler puts the replacements out at the trade counter, and Maxmove takes them to site in a compact van. Ceramics are fragile: they stay in the original carton, stand upright and are secured against shifting. The photos in the proof of delivery show the replacement arrived undamaged.

  • Pipework in a Duisburg industrial hall

An installer is renewing the drinking-water and heating pipework of an industrial hall in Duisburg's port area. Copper tube comes in 5 m lengths – longer than the load floor of any vehicle bookable online, so the firm requests a special transport for it. Multilayer pipe in coils, press fittings, pipe clips and insulation sleeves go in the van instead. The pipes stay sealed with end caps and the fittings in their bags until installed.

What applies when transporting plumbing and heating material

Units, drinking-water hygiene, dangerous goods and long items – and who is responsible for each.

  • Transport heat pumps and cylinders upright

Heat pump installation manuals state a maximum permissible tilt during transport to protect the compressor and refrigerant circuit. Plan for upright transport on the original pallet and state the height including pallet: the van has 1.35 m of internal height, the Sprinter L2 1.8 m. Under Section 412 of the German Commercial Code (HGB) the sender loads – usually the wholesaler. The unit is secured against tipping, and the driver checks the securing under Section 22 StVO before setting off.

  • Keep drinking-water components sealed

Under VDI 6023 and DIN EN 806-4, components for drinking-water installations should be protected from contamination from manufacture to commissioning. Pipes therefore stay sealed with end caps and fittings in their packaging – during transport too. The installing firm is responsible. Maxmove does not open packaging and carries the goods exactly as they leave the wholesaler; loose fittings in open buckets among tools are the worst option for hygiene.

  • Refrigerants, gases and aerosols

Refrigerant cylinders, propane and acetylene cylinders for brazing and aerosols such as expanding foam or leak-detection spray are ADR class 2 dangerous goods. Your firm may carry such goods to site itself under the tradesman exemption (ADR 1.1.3.1 c) in connection with its main activity – up to 450 litres per packaging and within the maximum quantities of 1.1.3.6; supply runs are excluded. If Maxmove is to carry them, inform us in advance in text form under Section 410 HGB; without review they do not travel.

  • Tube lengths and long items

Copper tube to DIN EN 1057 is usually supplied in 5 m lengths. The longest load floor bookable online is 4.2 to 4.3 m in the 3.5-tonne box van, and 3.2 m in the Sprinter L2. Full lengths are therefore a case for a special transport; multilayer pipe in coils, short drainage pipes and fittings fit in the vans. Long bundles are stowed so that, as Section 22 StVO requires, they do not shift even under full braking.

Which vehicle for which plumbing and heating material

Fittings, taps and valves go by car or compact van. Radiators, ceramics and pre-wall frames fit the van (2.6 m load length, 1.35 m height). The Sprinter L2 takes upright cylinders and outdoor units up to 1.8 m tall and up to four pallets. Several units, pipe bundles up to 4.2 m and loads up to 1,200 kg belong in the 3.5-tonne box van, loads up to 3,000 kg in the 7.5-tonne truck; full tube lengths, units over 3,000 kg or crane unloading are a [special transport](/sonderfahrten).

How a plumbing and heating delivery with Maxmove works

  1. 01

Order from the wholesaler, book with Maxmove

Order as usual and book the drive with collection number, trade counter or warehouse, site, weight and height of the largest unit. You see the instant price and earliest pickup window straight away.

  2. 02

    Collection at the counter

The driver gives the collection number and company name, and the wholesaler loads. Before leaving, the driver checks the securing and that units are upright.

  3. 03

    Direct drive to site

No depot, no reloading. Your fitter sees in live tracking when to come down to the driveway to unload.

  4. 04

    Handover with photos

Signature, time stamp and photos of packaging and goods – the basis if transport damage has to be claimed with the wholesaler.

Why Maxmove for Plumbing, heating & HVAC

  • Fitters install instead of driving to the counter

Maxmove takes over collection runs to the wholesaler. The installation team stays on site even if a part is still missing at midday, and commissioning stays on the planned day.

  • Large units in the right vehicle

You enter dimensions, weight and height and get a vehicle in which a heat pump or cylinder fits upright. Add a second person to help carry when needed.

  • Documented for site management and claims

Photos and time stamps show which unit was handed over when and in what condition. That helps with transport damage towards the wholesaler and with schedule questions towards the client.
