How to transport a mattress correctly

1

Use a protective cover

A mattress bag or foil protects against dirt, moisture, and grip marks – especially on the way through the staircase and on the load floor.

2

Do not fold

Spring mattresses must never be folded – the springs bend permanently. Cold foam and latex tolerate brief bending but should also travel flat or on their side.

3

Secure flat or on its side

Flat on a clean load floor or upright against the wall, strapped. Never stack anything heavy on top – pressure marks stay.

Which vehicle do you need?

A 90×200 mattress needs the van class with a 2.6 m load length; 160 and 180 double mattresses also travel flat there – together with slatted frame and bed. All dimensions and payloads in the van guide →

A mattress in the car or on the roof: what is realistic

Mattresses come in standardised nominal sizes: DIN EN 1334 lists widths of 90, 140, 160 and 180 cm at a length of 200 cm. Even a 90×200 mattress is longer than the load floor of most estate cars. Mattress maker bett1 considers it feasible in larger cars with the seats folded, but a 180×200 mattress in most cases not without squashing or folding it – which hardly any core tolerates for long.

The roof is no fallback. German traffic law (§ 22 StVO) requires a load not to slide, tip over or fall off even under full braking or sudden swerving. A mattress offers the airflow a large surface, gives way under ratchet straps and can hardly be fixed in a form-fitting way. On top of that comes the permitted roof load from the vehicle manual, which mattress and roof rack together must not exceed.

In a van, the mattress lies flat on a clean load floor or stands on its long edge against the side wall, with nothing heavy resting on it. In the 2.7 m class van even a 180 cm mattress travels flat, together with slatted base and dismantled bed frame. How to secure a load in a car in general is explained in our article on load securing in cars.

Rolling, folding, vacuum-packing: what each mattress core tolerates

Whether a mattress may be rolled depends on its core. According to bett1, spring mattresses can hardly be rolled, if at all; their metal springs can warp or break. They therefore always travel flat or on edge. Cold-foam mattresses are more flexible and can be transported rolled up for a short time.

Getting a roll-packed mattress back to its delivery size only works with the manufacturer's method. Emma describes two steps: put the mattress in a plastic bag and draw out the air with a vacuum cleaner, then roll it tightly – the bag's zip must be completely closed. Without the vacuum, the roll gets too thick and the foam is strained unnecessarily. Check beforehand whether your manufacturer allows re-rolling for your model.

After unpacking, the foam needs time: according to bett1, many roll-packed models take up to 72 hours to expand fully. So allow a night's buffer when moving – or transport the mattress unrolled in a van in the first place: flat, in a protective cover and with no weight on top.

Ship a mattress or have it driven directly

Anyone wanting to ship a mattress by parcel usually fails on the dimensions. DHL accepts bulky items up to 200 cm long and up to 360 cm in girth measurement – the longest side plus twice the width plus twice the height. A flat-packed 90×200 mattress 20 cm thick already comes to around 420 cm. Without vacuum rolling, the only option is a freight forwarder: the mattress then has to be fully wrapped in film and cardboard and is transshipped on the way.

A direct drive needs no packaging. The mattress is collected from the seller, the shop or your old flat, travels flat in a protective cover in the van and, if you like, is carried up to the bedroom. For spring mattresses, that is the decisive advantage, because they cannot be rolled.

With second-hand mattresses, take a close look before buying: Germany's Federal Environment Agency names second-hand mattresses, beds and upholstered furniture as one of the ways bed bugs get into homes. Check seams and edges for droppings, shed skins or insects before the mattress goes into the vehicle.
