Delivery from the store: where sales get stuck

Electronics, bike and bed specialists, book and toy shops, fashion stores and multi-branch retailers lose sales over one question at the till: can you deliver it? A large TV, an e-bike or a mattress fits neither the dimensions of a standard parcel nor every car boot. If you can only deliver days later by parcel service – or not at all – the customer goes to an online retailer.

Then there is stock moving between locations. Sizes are missing in one branch and sitting in another, fast sellers run out before the weekend, click-and-collect orders are never picked up. Typical mistakes: goods leave in a shopping bag instead of transport packaging, the customer cannot be reached at delivery, or the drop-off in the pedestrian zone falls outside the permitted delivery hours.

Maxmove picks up at your store and drives as a direct drive, with no parcel hub, to the customer or branch. You see the instant price before booking, your customer follows the drive via a tracking link without an app, and the proof of delivery records the handover with signature and photos. How same-day delivery works is explained on our same-day courier page.

Same-day delivery from stores in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Münster

Three deliveries that happen in high-street retail every day.

  • TV from Venloer Straße to Cologne-Nippes

An electronics retailer on Venloer Straße in Ehrenfeld sells a 65-inch TV in the afternoon. The customer came by train and lives in Nippes, second floor. You book a compact van; the TV travels upright in its original carton, secured against tipping. With carrying help it goes all the way into the flat; wall mounting and set-up are done by your service team or the customer. The customer gets the tracking link at the till.

  • Missing sizes for the branch in Düsseldorf's Altstadt

A fashion branch in Düsseldorf's Altstadt has sold out of the popular sizes on Friday afternoon; the branch in Düsseldorf-Bilk has them in stock. You book a car for six cartons, pickup in Bilk, delivery via the goods entrance. Because the Altstadt branch is in the pedestrian zone, you enter the access route in the order and plan the drop-off within the permitted delivery hours. On Saturday morning the stock is on the rails.

  • Click and collect by cargo bike in Münster

At a book and toy shop in Münster's Altstadt, a click-and-collect order has been sitting on the shelf for days; the customer in the Kreuzviertel cannot get to the shop. Instead of sending a parcel, you book a cargo bike: pickup at the shop, delivery to the Kreuzviertel, no hunting for a parking space in the centre. The customer signs digitally at the door, and the order shows you time and recipient.

What retailers need to watch at delivery

When delivering to consumers, the retailer carries the transport risk – and is responsible for the customer's data.

  • The risk stays with the retailer until handover

In a sale to a consumer, risk passes only on handover to the customer when you as the retailer commission the transport (§ 475(2) BGB, German Civil Code). If a TV breaks on the way, you still owe the customer an intact unit. That is why proof matters: signature, timestamp and photos of the handover. The recipient must report visible damage at delivery at the latest, hidden damage within seven days in text form (§ 438 HGB, German Commercial Code).

  • Customer data only as far as needed

You pass name and delivery address to the courier because delivery is impossible otherwise; the legal basis is performance of the sales contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Beyond that, data minimisation applies (Art. 5(1)(c) GDPR): a phone number only if it is needed for the handover; order history or payment details do not belong in the order. Your business remains responsible for this selection.

  • Transport packaging, not a shopping bag

Under German carriage law, packing is the sender's job: goods must be protected against loss and damage and labelled where necessary (§ 411 HGB). In a shop this means appliances in their original carton, TVs upright, fragile items padded, shopping bags inside a sealed box. Write the order number and recipient on every package so nothing is missing when there are several; a delivery note lists the contents.

  • Delivery hours in pedestrian zones

Many shopping streets are pedestrian zones where delivery traffic is only allowed at certain times. On Cologne's Eigelstein, for example, the city has limited delivery traffic to 6 to 11 a.m. on working days. If your shop is in such a zone, enter the goods entrance or an access route via a side street in the order and schedule van pickups within the permitted hours. Small consignments go by cargo bike with no parking search.

Which vehicle suits which store delivery

Cargo bike for books, fashion and small parcels in the city centre; car for cartons and bags up to 100 kg; compact van for TVs, bikes and branch restocks up to 400 kg or two Euro pallets; van with a 2.6 m load length for a washing machine, a mattress or several e-bikes; Sprinter L2 with 1.8 m interior height when fridge-freezers up to that height should travel upright.

How same-day delivery from your store works

  1. 01

Book at the till or via interface

Enter store address, customer address, dimensions and weight and immediately see the earliest pickup window and instant price. Online shops book through the interface for business customers.

  2. 02

    Pickup at the store

The driver collects the packed and labelled goods at the till, the stockroom or the goods entrance and secures them in the vehicle.

  3. 03

    Direct drive with tracking link

The consignment travels to the customer with no parcel hub. Your customer opens the tracking link in the browser, without app or login.

  4. 04

    Handover with proof

The customer signs digitally and the driver photographs the handover. You find the proof of delivery in the order – for complaints and for your accounts.

Why Maxmove for Retail

  • Delivery as a sales argument

When a customer asks whether you deliver, you can name the price straight away: book at the till, see the instant price and decide whether to pass it on. Bulky goods leave the shop without the customer needing a car.

  • Same-day restocking between branches

Missing sizes, sold-out fast sellers, an appliance from the central warehouse: as a direct drive the goods reach the branch without a detour via a parcel hub – often the same day, depending on the available pickup window.

  • Capacity without your own fleet

Instead of keeping vans and drivers, you book as needed – from cargo bike to van, and several drives in parallel during the Christmas season. Billing runs through your business account by invoice.
