Furniture delivery in retail: where dates and goods get damaged
Furniture stores, kitchen studios and interior retailers sell goods that rarely fit in a car: three-seater sofas, box-spring beds, highboards, kitchen runs with tall units and worktops. Their own delivery round runs on fixed days and is often booked up well in advance. Anything sold between two rounds – a showroom piece, a stock item, a follow-up delivery – leaves the customer waiting or sends the fitter out without all the parts.
The usual mistakes happen at the handovers. Goods are packed for a pallet, not for the stairwell of an old townhouse. Nobody asked about the floor, the lift or the width of the stairs. A scratch is spotted in the evening and can no longer be traced to any stage. With kitchens, the worktop rather than the cabinet volume usually decides the vehicle – and one missing panel holds up the entire installation.
Maxmove runs every furniture delivery as a direct drive: one vehicle, from warehouse or store straight to the customer, with no transfer at a depot. You choose the vehicle by the longest part, see the instant price before booking, request carrying help for upstairs deliveries and receive proof of delivery with timestamp, signature and photos.

Typical furniture deliveries in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Bielefeld
Three drives that come up every week in furniture and kitchen retail.
Showroom sofa to Cologne-Sülz, third floor
A furniture store in Cologne-Porz sells its showroom sofa on Saturday. The customer lives in an old townhouse in Sülz, third floor, no lift. You book a van with a 2.6 m load length plus carrying help, enter floor, stairwell and doorbell name in the order and protect the armrests and feet with blankets and edge guards. The driver collects at the warehouse, drives to Sülz without any other stop and records the sofa in place with photos and the customer's signature.
Kitchen with worktop to Düsseldorf-Oberkassel
A kitchen studio in Düsseldorf-Flingern has its fitter booked for Tuesday morning at a customer's home in Oberkassel. The cabinets fit in a Sprinter; the worktop does not – it is longer than most van load floors. So you book the Sprinter L3 or 3.5 t box van with a 4.2 to 4.3 m load length and time the pickup so the goods arrive before installation starts. The fitter follows the arrival live, and the proof of delivery confirms that every package was handed over.
Replacement front for an installation in Bielefeld-Brackwede
During an installation in Brackwede a damaged cabinet door turns up. The replacement front sits in the retailer's warehouse in Bielefeld-Sennestadt. Rather than sending it with next week's round, you book a compact van: the packed front travels alone in the vehicle straight to the site, the fitter takes it and signs digitally. The customer gets a finished kitchen, and your fitter does not have to come back a second time.

What retailers should settle before delivery
German sales law, carriage law and the Electrical Equipment Act set out who is responsible for what in furniture delivery.
Delivery date: 30 days at most without agreement
If a sales contract with a consumer sets no delivery date, the customer can demand delivery without undue delay, and the retailer must hand over the goods no later than 30 days after the contract was concluded (§ 475(1) BGB, German Civil Code). If a date was agreed, that date applies. For stock items that are only waiting for the next free round, a booked direct drive closes the gap. Record the promised date in the order so pickup and delivery window match it.
Transport risk and damage notice
When the retailer commissions the transport in a consumer sale, the retailer bears the risk of damage or loss until the goods are handed to the customer (§ 475(2) BGB). Visible damage must be reported at delivery at the latest, hidden damage within seven days in text form (§ 438 HGB, German Commercial Code). That is why photos of the condition at handover and the customer's signature belong in the proof – and visible defects straight into a damage report.
Packing, loading, securing
Under German carriage law the sender packs the goods so they are protected against loss and damage (§ 411 HGB) and loads them safely for transport unless agreed otherwise (§ 412 HGB). For furniture this means edge guards, blankets or film, glass inserts and keys packed separately, drawers and doors secured. During the drive the driver is responsible for compliant load securing (§§ 22, 23 StVO, German road traffic regulations): nothing may slide or tip over under emergency braking.
Appliances: take-back of old units stays with the retailer
Retailers with at least 400 m² of sales area for electrical equipment must take back an old appliance of the same type free of charge when selling a new one. If the new unit is delivered to a household, collection there must be free for the customer, and the customer must be asked at purchase whether they want to hand an old unit back (§ 17 ElektroG). You organise this take-back and disposal yourself: Maxmove delivers the new fridge or oven but does not handle disposal.
Access, carrying, installation
Whether delivery ends at the kerb or inside the flat is set by your sales contract – the order has to reflect it: floor, lift, stair width, walking route and a place to stop outside. For items that need two people, request carrying help. Assembly, wall mounting and connecting appliances are not part of the transport; your fitter or after-sales service remains responsible for them.
Which vehicle suits which furniture delivery
Compact van for fronts, chairs and boxed goods up to 400 kg; van with a 2.6 m load length for a sofa, chest of drawers or dining table; Sprinter L2 with 1.8 m interior height when wardrobes or beds should travel upright; Sprinter L3 or 3.5 t box van for complete kitchens and extra-long worktops. Heavier or bulkier loads run as a [special transport](/sonderfahrten).

How a furniture delivery works with Maxmove
- 01
Create the order with dimensions
Enter pickup address, customer address, dimensions and weight of each package, floor, lift and any carrying help. You immediately see the vehicle, the earliest pickup window and the binding instant price.
- 02
Pickup at warehouse or store
The driver takes over the packed goods at the dock or shop door and checks the number of packages and their outer condition. The driver secures the load in the vehicle against sliding and tipping.
- 03
Direct drive with live tracking
The goods travel to the customer without reloading. You and your customer follow the drive via a link, and your fitter can see when to start work.
- 04
Handover with photos and signature
The customer signs digitally and the driver photographs the delivered goods. Visible damage is noted at handover; you can retrieve the proof in the order.
Why Maxmove for Furniture retail
Delivery between two rounds
A sold stock item, a follow-up delivery, a replacement for a complaint: you book exactly the drive you need and see the price first. Your own round stays for planned deliveries, and you cover sales peaks without an extra delivery van.
Vehicle chosen by the longest part
From compact van to 3.5-tonner with more than four metres of load length: you choose by package size and weight, including worktops and tall wardrobes. Request carrying help for upstairs deliveries in the same booking.
Proof for every complaint
Every handover is recorded with timestamp, signature and photos. If a customer reports a scratch later, you can see the condition in which the goods were handed over – which matters for as long as you carry the transport risk.
