Florist deliveries: living goods with a fixed date

Florists deliver goods that cannot be made again if they arrive late: a casket spray and wreaths for an 11 a.m. funeral, the bridal bouquet and table flowers for a wedding, room decoration for a gala, the weekly arrangements in a hotel lobby. The date is fixed before the order comes in, and on peak days such as Valentine's Day, Mother's Day or before All Saints' Day your own van is not enough.

What goes wrong in transport often only shows at the recipient. An arrangement tips over on a bend, water spills, blooms snap because tall pieces had to lie down. In winter, frost does damage during loading and unloading; in summer, a hot load space does. And next to crates of fruit or in the exhaust of a running engine, ethylene-sensitive flowers such as carnations, lilies or gypsophila age faster.

Maxmove drives floristry as a direct drive: your order is the only load in the vehicle, with no reloading and no stop in between. You choose the vehicle by the height of your arrangements, follow the drive live and receive proof of delivery with timestamp, signature and photo – even when the goods are left with the funeral director, the wedding planner or at the hotel reception.

Typical florist drives in Cologne, Düsseldorf and Essen

Funeral, wedding, hotel and trade fair: three drives with a fixed date.

  • Casket spray and wreaths to Cologne's Melaten cemetery

A florist in Cologne-Ehrenfeld has made a casket spray and three wreaths with ribbons for a funeral at Melaten cemetery. The spray is long and flat, so you book a van with a 2.6 m load length; the wreaths lie secured beside it. Without a driving permit the van may not use the cemetery paths, so the handover point is the cemetery entrance agreed with the funeral director, who receives the flowers there in good time before the service and signs digitally.

  • Wedding flowers for a venue in southern Düsseldorf

A florist in Düsseldorf-Pempelfort makes twelve table arrangements, two floor vases with cherry branches and the bridal bouquet for a wedding in southern Düsseldorf. The floor vases are taller than the load space of a standard van, so you book the Sprinter L2 with 1.8 m interior height: everything travels upright in crates, the vases wedged against tipping. The wedding planner receives the flowers at the service entrance, and the photo shows the complete delivery.

  • Hotel flowers and a trade-fair stand in Essen-Rüttenscheid

A florist in Essen-Rüttenscheid supplies a hotel with reception flowers every Monday; a recurring drive with a fixed pickup window and handover at reception takes care of that. During a trade fair at Messe Essen the florist also supplies an exhibitor with planters and floor arrangements. For that you book a van and clarify access and loading zone with the exhibitor beforehand. Handover is at the stand, with photo and signature.

What florists should settle before the drive

Flowers are living goods: temperature, water, ethylene and the place of handover decide how they arrive.

  • Cemeteries: access and photos only with permission

On Cologne's municipal cemeteries, paths may only be driven on by service vehicles or with special permission; tradespeople need a driving permit from the cemetery administration (Cologne cemetery statute, §§ 6 and 7). Photos and filming are only allowed there for private purposes unless approved. So agree a handover point at the entrance or the funeral hall and a contact at the funeral director's who signs digitally. Other cities set this in their own cemetery statutes.

  • Temperature: frost, heat and tropical species

Most cut flowers keep longest close to freezing point. Tropical species such as anthuriums, birds of paradise or heliconias, by contrast, suffer chilling injury below about 10 °C. As standard the vehicles are not refrigerated, and the goods also have to cope with loading and unloading. In winter, wrap in paper or film against frost; in summer, deliver in the morning where possible and do not leave crates standing in the sun.

  • Ethylene: only your goods in the load space

Ethylene from ripening fruit and engine exhaust makes sensitive flowers age faster; these include carnations, lilies, snapdragons, freesias and gypsophila. The effect is stronger in warm conditions. On a direct drive no other load sits next to your arrangements. Plan the handover so crates do not stand for long next to running engines at a loading bay, and do not pack fruit decorations in the same crate as sensitive cut flowers.

  • Water and stability: the florist's part

Under German carriage law the sender packs the goods so they are protected against damage (§ 411 HGB, German Commercial Code). For floristry this means arrangements in floral foam or with water tubes, bouquets in stable vessels or transport crates with inserts, water only so high that nothing spills under emergency braking. The driver secures the crates against sliding and tipping (§ 22 StVO); tall arrangements need a vehicle with enough interior height to travel upright.

Which vehicle suits which floristry

Car for single bouquets and bridal flowers; compact van for funeral arrangements, wreaths and table flowers in crates up to 400 kg; van with a 2.6 m load length when long casket sprays must lie flat; Sprinter L2 with 1.8 m interior height for floor vases, flower arches and planters that travel upright. With floristry, height usually matters more than weight.
